Early Life
William Scott Landay was born on July 23, 1963, in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended the Roxbury Latin School, graduated from Yale University, and earned his law degree from Boston College Law School.
Career
Before writing, Landay served for seven years as an Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, prosecuting criminal cases. His debut novel, Mission Flats (2003), won the Crime Writers’ Association’s New Blood Dagger for best debut crime novel. His second novel, The Strangler (2007), drew on the Boston Strangler era and was shortlisted for the Strand Magazine Critics Award. His breakthrough was Defending Jacob (2012), about an assistant DA whose teenage son is accused of murder; it became an immediate New York Times bestseller, won the Strand Critics Award for best mystery novel, and was adapted into an acclaimed Apple TV+ miniseries starring Chris Evans. His fourth novel, All That Is Mine I Carry With Me, was published in 2024.
Major Works
His novels are Mission Flats, The Strangler, Defending Jacob, and All That Is Mine I Carry With Me. Each is a standalone crime novel rooted in the Boston area.
Writing Style and Themes
Landay writes deliberate, morally serious crime fiction in the tradition of the literary legal thriller. His prose is measured and psychologically dense, more interested in the erosion of certainty than in plot pyrotechnics. His recurring themes are the fallibility of the justice system, the secrets families keep, and the terrifying gap between what parents believe about their children and what is true. Defending Jacob is built on the question of whether evil can be inherited, and his work consistently refuses comforting answers.
Legacy
Defending Jacob became one of the defining legal thrillers of the 2010s, widely taught and discussed for its treatment of parental loyalty and genetic determinism. The Apple TV+ adaptation introduced Landay to a global television audience. He is regarded as one of the finest contemporary writers of intelligent, character-driven crime fiction.
