Gino Wickman – Author Biography

Early Life

Gino Wickman grew up in Detroit, Michigan, in an entrepreneurial family. He began working in the family business as a teenager and by his mid-twenties was running it — an experience that taught him, firsthand, the chaos of leading a growing company without a system.

Career

Wickman’s career turned on a realization: the tools he had cobbled together to run his family business could help other entrepreneurs. He spent years refining them into the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), a complete framework for running small and mid-sized companies, built around six key components: Vision, People, Data, Issues, Process, and Traction. He captured it in Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business (2007), which became a bible for founders, selling over a million copies. Rocket Fuel (2015, with Mark C. Winters) described the essential partnership between the Visionary founder and the Integrator operator. Wickman founded EOS Worldwide to train implementers, then stepped back from daily operations to focus on his next mission: helping entrepreneurs in the pursuit of their “10-year thinking.”

Major Works

Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business (2007), Rocket Fuel (2015), How to Be a Great Boss (2016), What the Heck Is EOS? (2017), Entrepreneurial Leap (2019), The EOS Life (2021).

Writing Style and Themes

Wickman writes plainspoken, tool-heavy business books: every chapter ends with checklists, exercises, and worksheets a leadership team can use in a meeting that afternoon. His core ideas — the Vision/Traction organizer, quarterly “Rocks,” the Level 10 Meeting, the People Analyzer — are designed for immediate implementation. His theme is that entrepreneurial chaos is curable: with simple disciplines, repeated consistently, any leadership team can get aligned and execute.

Legacy

EOS is now one of the most widely adopted business operating systems in the world, implemented in tens of thousands of companies. Traction sits on nearly every startup bookshelf, and Wickman’s frameworks have become standard vocabulary for founders, coaches, and consultants.
