Annie Duke – Author Biography
Early Life
Annie Duke was born Anne LaBarr Lederer in 1965 in Concord, New Hampshire. She studied English and psychology at Columbia University and earned a PhD in cognitive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where her research focused on how people learn. Before finishing, she left academia — and used a small stake from her brother to start playing professional poker.
Career
Duke became one of the most successful poker players of her era, winning a World Series of Poker bracelet in 2004 and more than $4 million in tournament earnings. She retired from poker in 2012 and reinvented herself as a decision strategist, speaker, and author, applying lessons from the poker table to business and life. Her books include Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don’t Have All the Facts (2018), How to Decide (2020), and Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away (2022).
Major Works
Her key books are Thinking in Bets (2018), How to Decide (2020), and Quit (2022).
Writing Style and Themes
Duke writes clear, practical decision science illustrated with poker stories and vivid thought experiments. Her recurring themes are separating decision quality from outcome quality (“resulting”), thinking in probabilities rather than certainties, overcoming cognitive biases, and the undervalued skill of quitting — walking away from losing hands, failing projects, and dead-end paths.
Legacy
Duke helped popularise probabilistic thinking for general readers and executives, becoming a sought-after voice on decision-making under uncertainty. Thinking in Bets is widely recommended in business and investing circles.
