Andy Weir – Author Biography

Early Life

Andy Weir was born on June 16, 1972, in Davis, California. The son of a particle physicist, he grew up fascinated by science and space. He studied computer science at the University of California, San Diego, and went to work as a software engineer for companies including AOL, Palm, and Blizzard Entertainment, where he worked on Warcraft II.

Career

Weir wrote The Martian as a hobby, posting chapters free on his website and meticulously researching the science so that every survival hack would be plausible. Readers begged for an ebook version, so he self-published it on Amazon in 2011 — where it shot to the top of the science fiction charts. Crown Publishing acquired it in 2013, and Ridley Scott’s 2015 film adaptation starring Matt Damon became a blockbuster nominated for seven Academy Awards. Weir left software to write full-time.

Major Works

The Martian (2011/2014), Artemis (2017) — a heist novel set on the Moon’s first city — and Project Hail Mary (2021), about a lone astronaut who must save the sun itself. Project Hail Mary won the Goodreads Choice Award for Science Fiction and is being adapted into a film starring Ryan Gosling.

Writing Style and Themes

Weir writes hard science fiction with a comedian’s voice: his protagonists are competent, wisecracking problem-solvers who narrate their way through impossible situations with science, duct tape, and gallows humor. His signature is “competence porn” — the deep pleasure of watching smart people solve hard problems correctly. His themes are optimism about human ingenuity, the value of scientific literacy, and the idea that survival is a team sport even when you’re alone.

Legacy

Weir is the defining hard-SF novelist of the 2010s and 2020s, credited with reviving scientifically rigorous space fiction for mainstream readers. The Martian inspired a surge of interest in Mars exploration, and NASA has praised the novel’s scientific accuracy. His self-publishing-to-Hollywood story remains one of modern publishing’s great fairy tales.
