Andre Agassi – Author Biography

Andre Agassi is the American tennis legend — an eight-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 — whose autobiography Open (2009) is widely considered the greatest sports memoir ever written.

Early Life

Andre Kirk Agassi was born on April 29, 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to an Iranian-Armenian former Olympic boxer father who was obsessed with making his son a tennis champion. Agassi was hitting thousands of balls a day from early childhood under his father’s relentless drilling, and he dropped out of school in ninth grade to attend the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida.

Career

Agassi turned professional at sixteen in 1986 and became famous as tennis’s rebel — long hair, denim shorts, neon clothes, and a ferocious return of serve. He won his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 1992, but his career nearly collapsed in the late 1990s amid injuries, a failed marriage to Brooke Shields, and a crystal-meth habit he later confessed to. His comeback — guided by trainer Gil Reyes and his future wife Steffi Graf — is one of sports’ great redemption stories: he returned to world No. 1 in 1999 and completed the career Grand Slam (winning all four majors), later adding the Career Golden Slam with Olympic gold from 1996. He retired in 2006 after twenty years on tour, having won eight Grand Slam singles titles and 60 tour titles.

Major Works

His major work is the autobiography Open (2009), written with J.R. Moehringer.

Writing Style and Themes

Open is written in a raw, present-tense, confessional voice — Agassi’s famous opening line declares his hatred of tennis, “with a dark and secret passion.” Its themes are the cost of prodigy, the tyranny of a father’s dream, addiction and self-destruction, and the long road to playing for oneself. It is as much about identity and freedom as about sport.

Legacy

Agassi transformed tennis’s image — bringing rock-star charisma and a new athleticism to the game — and Open transformed the sports memoir, praised for a honesty rare in athlete autobiographies. His Andre Agassi Foundation for Education has built schools for at-risk children in Las Vegas.
