Michael Connelly – Author Biography
Early Life
Michael Joseph Connelly was born on July 21, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As a teenager he became fascinated by crime after witnessing a man toss an object into a hedge during a police chase, an incident he later traced to the novels of Raymond Chandler, which he began devouring. He studied building construction at the University of Florida before switching to journalism, graduating with a degree that launched him into newspaper reporting.
Career
Connelly worked as a crime reporter for the Fort Lauderdale News and then the Los Angeles Times, covering the crime beat during the era of the Hillside Strangler and other notorious cases. His reporting earned him a Pulitzer Prize finalist citation, and the newsroom gave him the authentic procedural detail that would define his fiction. His debut novel, The Black Echo (1992), introduced LAPD detective Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch and won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. He has since published nearly forty novels, alternating between the Bosch series, the Mickey Haller “Lincoln Lawyer” legal thrillers, the Renée Ballard series, and standalones such as The Poet and Blood Work. He is also a television producer and writer, serving as creator and executive producer of the long-running Amazon series Bosch and its spinoffs, as well as the Netflix adaptation of The Lincoln Lawyer.
Major Works
The cornerstone of Connelly’s output is the Harry Bosch series, beginning with The Black Echo and continuing through The Black Ice, The Concrete Blonde, The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, and Angels Flight, among many others. The Mickey Haller series launched with The Lincoln Lawyer (2005), later filmed with Matthew McConaughey, and continued in The Brass Verdict, The Reversal, and The Fifth Witness. Standalone thrillers The Poet (1996) and Blood Work (1998, filmed with Clint Eastwood) are considered among his finest.
Writing Style and Themes
Connelly writes lean, procedurally exact crime fiction rooted in real police work. His novels move at a steady investigative clip, with detail drawn from his years on the crime beat: warrant procedures, forensics, and newsroom rhythms all feel lived-in. His defining theme, voiced by Bosch’s mantra “everybody counts or nobody counts,” is an insistence on justice for the overlooked. Across series, characters age in real time and cross into one another’s books, building one of the most coherent shared universes in modern crime fiction.
Legacy
With more than 80 million copies sold worldwide and translations into over forty languages, Connelly is one of the bestselling crime writers of his generation. He has won the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, and Nero awards, and in 2018 received the Crime Writers’ Association Diamond Dagger, the highest honor in British crime writing, for lifetime achievement. The Bosch television universe has extended his influence to a new medium, cementing Harry Bosch as one of the defining detectives of contemporary fiction.
