Silvia Moreno-Garcia – Author Biography

Early Life

Silvia Moreno-Garcia was born in 1981 in Baja California, Mexico, and raised in Mexico before moving to Canada. She studied communications and worked in publishing, co-founding the small press Innsmouth Free Press and editing the magazine Shine. She began publishing short fiction in the late 2000s while building a career as an editor and critic of speculative fiction.

Career

Moreno-Garcia’s early novels, like Signal to Noise (2015), blended Mexican settings with fantasy. Her breakthrough came with Gods of Jade and Shadow (2019), a Jazz Age fantasy rooted in Mayan mythology, and then Mexican Gothic (2020) — a haunted-house mystery set in 1950s Mexico — which became an international bestseller and a book-club phenomenon. She has since moved fluidly across genres: the noir Velvet Was the Night (2021), the literary The Daughter of Doctor Moreau (2022), and the thriller Silver Nitrate (2023). Remarkably prolific, she publishes roughly a book a year across wildly different modes.

Major Works

Her major novels include Signal to Noise (2015), Gods of Jade and Shadow (2019), Mexican Gothic (2020), Velvet Was the Night (2021), The Daughter of Doctor Moreau (2022), and Silver Nitrate (2023). She has also published acclaimed short-story collections and edited speculative fiction anthologies.

Writing Style and Themes

Moreno-Garcia is a genre chameleon with a historian’s eye: each novel immerses readers in a meticulously researched time and place — 1920s Mexico, 1970s Mexico City noir, the golden age of Mexican horror cinema. Her recurring themes are colonialism and its hauntings, Mexican identity and history, women’s constrained choices, and the porous border between the real and the fantastic. She writes with lush atmosphere and propulsive plotting, equally at home in gothic horror, fantasy, and crime.

Legacy

Silvia Moreno-Garcia has become one of the most acclaimed speculative fiction writers of her generation, winning the Locus Award and World Fantasy Award among others. Mexican Gothic brought Mexican-centered gothic fiction to a massive mainstream audience. Her career is a model of artistic restlessness — proof that a writer can master many genres without losing a distinctive voice.
