Shelley Parker-Chan – Author Biography

Shelley Parker-Chan is a non-binary Australian fantasy novelist whose debut, She Who Became the Sun — a queer reimagining of the founding of China’s Ming dynasty — won the Astounding Award for Best New Writer and the British Fantasy Award, and became an international bestseller.

Early Life

Shelley Parker-Chan was born in New Zealand to a Malaysian-Chinese mother and a white father, and raised in Australia, where they grew up feeling disconnected from both their Asian identity and the stereotypical depictions of Asian characters in fiction. Named after the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, they were raised on Greek myths, Arthurian legend, and Chinese tales of tragic romance.

Career

Before writing fiction, Parker-Chan did graduate work on war crimes and restorative justice, then spent nearly a decade as a diplomat for Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade — including a posting in Timor-Leste — and as an international development adviser on gender equality and LGBTQ rights in Indonesia. Their love of epic East Asian historical television dramas, and the absence of English-language novels like them, drove them to write their own. In 2017 they received an Otherwise (Tiptree) Fellowship for speculative work expanding understandings of gender. Their debut novel, She Who Became the Sun (2021) — in which a peasant girl takes her dead brother’s identity and destiny to become the founder of the Ming dynasty — was a Sunday Times number-one bestseller, translated into many languages. Its sequel, He Who Drowned the World (2023), completed the Radiant Emperor duology.

Major Works

Their major works are the Radiant Emperor duology: She Who Became the Sun (2021) and He Who Drowned the World (2023).

Writing Style and Themes

Parker-Chan writes lush, brutal historical fantasy — epic in scope, intimate in psychology. Their great themes are gender and power: what it costs to seize a destiny the world says is not yours, and how ambition warps love. The novels blend real history (the rise of Zhu Yuanzhang, founder of the Ming dynasty) with queer romance and fantasy, asking whether greatness requires the sacrifice of the self.

Legacy

With a single duology, Parker-Chan became one of the most decorated new voices in fantasy — winning the 2022 Astounding Award for Best New Writer and British Fantasy Awards for both Best Fantasy Novel and Best Newcomer. Their work has expanded what historical epic fantasy can be: queer, Asian-centered, and unafraid of moral darkness.
