Kennedy Ryan – Author Biography

Early Life

Kennedy Ryan is the pen name of an American romance novelist. She studied journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, writing for her city’s newspaper in high school. Before turning to fiction, she worked as a writer for nonprofit organizations and as a ghostwriter for nonfiction books. She is the mother of an autistic son, an experience that made her an activist and the founder of a nonprofit foundation serving families living with autism.

Career

Ryan got her first book deal at age 40 and debuted with When You Are Mine (2014), launching the Bennett series. Her Hoops series, exploring the lives of professional basketball players, and her All the King’s Men series built her reputation for emotionally intense romance that confronts social issues — domestic violence, racism, grief. In 2019 she became the first Black author to win the RITA Award from the Romance Writers of America, taking Best Contemporary Romance for Long Shot, a novel inspired by real-life domestic violence incidents. Her Skyland series — Before I Let Go (2022), This Could Be Us (2024), Can’t Get Enough (2025) — became bestsellers; Before I Let Go was optioned by Peacock for television adaptation.

Major Works

The Bennett series, the Grip series, the Hoops series (Long Shot, 2018), the All the King’s Men series, the Hollywood Renaissance duology (Reel, 2021), and the Skyland series (Before I Let Go, 2022; This Could Be Us, 2024; Can’t Get Enough, 2025).

Writing Style and Themes

Ryan writes contemporary romance with unusual emotional depth and social conscience: her love stories tackle domestic abuse, systemic racism, grief, and disability without flinching. She deliberately centers Black women and other marginalized heroines, giving them the sweeping, respectful love stories the genre long denied them. Her prose is lyrical and raw, and her books balance hope with honesty about pain.

Legacy

Ryan’s historic RITA win broke a barrier in romance publishing, and her success has helped reshape the genre’s center of gravity toward diverse voices and socially engaged storytelling. She is one of the most acclaimed romance novelists of her generation.
