Kenneth Blanchard – Author Biography

Kenneth Blanchard – Author Biography

Kenneth Blanchard — known to millions as Ken Blanchard — is the co-author of The One Minute Manager, one of the best-selling management books of all time, and one of the most influential leadership thinkers of the past fifty years. His simple, story-driven approach to management has shaped how generations of managers lead.

Early Life

Kenneth Hartley Blanchard was born on May 6, 1939, in Orange, New Jersey. He earned his bachelor’s degree in government and philosophy from Cornell University in 1961, a master’s in sociology and counseling from Colgate University in 1963, and a PhD in educational administration and leadership from Cornell in 1967. He began his career in academia, teaching and serving as a dean at institutions including Ohio University and the University of Massachusetts.

Career

While working on a management textbook with Paul Hersey, Blanchard co-created the theory of Situational Leadership — the idea that effective leaders adapt their style to the situation. In 1982, he and Spencer Johnson published The One Minute Manager, a slim parable about a manager who achieves results through One Minute Goals, One Minute Praisings, and One Minute Reprimands. It became a phenomenon, selling more than 15 million copies. In 1979, Blanchard and his wife, Marjorie, co-founded the Ken Blanchard Companies, an international management training and consulting firm headquartered in San Diego. He has since written or co-written more than 70 books, including Leadership and the One Minute Manager, Raving Fans, Gung Ho!, and The Secret. He is famous for the saying, “None of us is as smart as all of us.”

Major Works

Blanchard’s landmark book is The One Minute Manager (1982, with Spencer Johnson; updated as The New One Minute Manager in 2015). His other major works include Leadership and the One Minute Manager, Raving Fans, Gung Ho!, and Whale Done!

Writing Style and Themes

Blanchard writes in parables — short, simple stories with plainly stated morals, designed to be read in one sitting and remembered for years. His great theme is servant leadership: that the best leaders serve their people rather than commanding them, catching employees “doing things right” rather than doing things wrong. His philosophy blends management science with an almost spiritual humanism — he even titled himself the “chief spiritual officer” of his company. Critics sometimes find the books simplistic; practitioners find them transformative precisely because the lessons are so easy to apply.

Legacy

Blanchard was inducted into Amazon’s Hall of Fame as one of the Top 25 Best-Selling Authors of All Time, and his Situational Leadership model is taught in organizations worldwide. The One Minute Manager essentially invented the modern parable-driven business book, a genre that now fills airport bookstores. His influence on management thinking — the shift from command-and-control to coaching and empowerment — is immeasurable.
