Caitlin Starling – Author Biography

Early Life

Caitlin Starling is an American writer who lives near Portland, Oregon. She holds a degree in anthropology and describes herself as a “spreadsheet-wrangler” with an unhealthy interest in the dark and macabre — interests that feed directly into her fiction.

Career

Starling writes horror-tinged speculative fiction. Her debut novel, The Luminous Dead (2019) — a claustrophobic survival story about a caver trapped on an alien world, guided only by an unreliable voice on her radio — won the LOHF Best Debut Award and was nominated for both the Bram Stoker and Locus Awards. She followed with the gothic horrors Yellow Jessamine (2020) and The Death of Jane Lawrence (2021), which became a national bestseller, then Last to Leave the Room (2021). Her recent novels The Starving Saints (2025) and The Graceview Patient (2025) showcase her genre-hopping range, from besieged medieval castles to haunted hospitals. She also works in narrative design for interactive theater and games, and her short fiction and nonfiction have appeared in GrimDark Magazine, Nightmare, and Uncanny.

Major Works

The Luminous Dead (2019), Yellow Jessamine (2020), The Death of Jane Lawrence (2021), Last to Leave the Room (2021), The Starving Saints (2025), The Graceview Patient (2025).

Writing Style and Themes

Starling specializes in slow-burn, atmospheric dread: unreliable narrators, isolated settings, and horror that creeps through psychology and body rather than gore. Her protagonists are often competent women confronting institutions — employers, husbands, churches — that want to consume them. Her themes include power and dependence, the unreliability of perception, and survival at terrible cost. She is, in her own words, always looking for new ways to inflict insomnia.

Legacy

Starling is one of the most acclaimed horror voices to emerge in the late 2010s, with award nominations and bestseller status marking her rapid rise. Her genre-hopping bibliography — alien caves, gothic manors, besieged castles, haunted hospitals — has made her a standout in modern horror.
