Carol S. Dweck – Author Biography

Early Life

Carol Susan Dweck was born on October 17, 1946, in New York. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Barnard College and her Ph.D. in psychology from Yale University. Early in her research career, she became fascinated by a puzzle: why do some children crumble after failure while others thrive on it?

Career

Dweck taught at Columbia, Harvard, and the University of Illinois before joining Stanford University, where she is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology. Decades of research led to her landmark distinction between “fixed” and “growth” mindsets — the beliefs people hold about whether abilities can be developed. Her 2006 book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success brought the idea to millions of readers and transformed education, coaching, and management.

Major Works

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (2006) is her signature work, updated in later editions. Her academic papers on implicit theories of intelligence, motivation, and self-theories are among the most cited in psychology.

Writing Style and Themes

Dweck writes accessible, research-driven psychology prose, full of studies, classroom stories, and practical applications. Her central idea is elegantly simple: people with a fixed mindset believe abilities are static and avoid challenges; people with a growth mindset believe abilities can be developed and embrace effort. The kicker: mindsets themselves can be changed. Her themes are effort, resilience, the power of “yet” (“I can’t do this yet“), and how praise for process beats praise for talent.

Legacy

Dweck’s growth mindset is one of the most influential ideas in modern psychology and education — taught in schools worldwide, adopted by companies, and applied by coaches and parents everywhere. She has shown that a single belief about the nature of ability can reshape how people learn, lead, and live. Few researchers have so directly changed how the world thinks about thinking.
