Todd Kashdan – Author Biography

Early Life

Todd Kashdan is an American psychologist and author. He earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His research career began with a contrarian question: if positive psychology tells us to be happy all the time, what do we lose by suppressing the “dark side” of our emotions?

Career

Kashdan is a professor of psychology at George Mason University, where he directs the Well-Being Laboratory. His research focuses on curiosity, psychological flexibility, and the adaptive value of difficult emotions. His first popular book, Curious? Discover the Missing Ingredient to a Fulfilling Life (2009), argued that curiosity is the engine of meaning, relationships, and growth. The Upside of Your Dark Side: Why Being Your Whole Self — Not Just Your “Good” Self — Drives Success and Fulfillment (2014, with Robert Biswas-Diener) made the case that anger, anxiety, guilt, and even mindlessness have vital uses — and that the relentless pursuit of happiness can backfire. He is a popular speaker and writes for outlets including Harvard Business Review and Psychology Today.

Major Works

Curious? (2009) and The Upside of Your Dark Side (2014).

Writing Style and Themes

Kashdan writes as a scientist-debunker: warm, evidence-driven, and fond of overturning pop-psychology clichés. His signature concept is psychological flexibility — the ability to adapt thoughts and behavior to the situation — which his research identifies as the key to well-being. His themes include the value of curiosity, the functionality of negative emotions, and “wholeheartedness” over forced positivity.

Legacy

Kashdan is one of the leading voices in the second wave of positive psychology — the wave that corrected the first wave’s excesses. The Upside of Your Dark Side helped mainstream the idea that emotional agility, not constant happiness, is the goal, influencing therapy, coaching, and workplace culture.
