Tim Grover – Author Biography
Early Life
Tim Grover is an American trainer and author who built his career from an unlikely cold call: as a young trainer in Chicago, he wrote to every NBA team offering his services, and only the Chicago Bulls replied. That gamble made him the personal trainer of Michael Jordan during the Bulls’ championship dynasty.
Career
Grover became the most sought-after trainer in professional basketball, working with Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and Charles Barkley through his company ATTACK Athletics. He distilled his philosophy into two books: Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable (2013) and Winning: The Unforgiving Race to Greatness (2021). He is a prominent speaker on elite performance and the psychology of winning.
Major Works
Relentless (2013) and Winning (2021).
Writing Style and Themes
Grover writes in a blunt, confrontational locker-room voice — no comfort, no excuses. His recurring themes are the three tiers of competitors (Coolers, Closers, and Cleaners), the loneliness of obsession, trusting instinct over overthinking, and the idea that greatness demands embracing the “dark side” of competitive drive. His tone is deliberately uncomfortable: comfort is the enemy.
Legacy
Grover’s “Cleaner” concept entered sports psychology slang, and Relentless became a cult favourite among athletes and entrepreneurs who distrust soft motivational literature.
