Ryan Holiday – Author Biography
Ryan Holiday is the writer who almost single-handedly revived Stoicism for the modern age. His books — The Obstacle Is the Way, Ego Is the Enemy, The Daily Stoic — have sold millions of copies and made ancient philosophy the operating system of Silicon Valley, professional sports, and the U.S. military.
Early Life
Holiday was born on June 16, 1987, in Sacramento, California. He attended the University of California, Riverside, but dropped out at nineteen to apprentice himself to the strategist and author Robert Greene, serving as his research assistant on Greene’s books about power and strategy.
Career
Holiday’s first career was in marketing: he became director of marketing at American Apparel at a young age and advised numerous startups and authors, later writing about growth-hacking tactics in Trust Me, I’m Lying (2012), a confessional exposé of media manipulation. But his pivot to philosophy changed everything. The Obstacle Is the Way (2014) — drawing on Marcus Aurelius’s maxim that “the impediment to action advances action” — became a cult favorite among athletes, entrepreneurs, and coaches. Ego Is the Enemy (2016) warned against the destructive force of ego, and The Daily Stoic (2016), co-written with Stephen Hanselman, offered 366 days of Stoic meditations and became a perennial bestseller. He followed with Stillness Is the Key (2019), Courage Is Calling (2021), Discipline Is Destiny (2022), and Right Thing, Right Now (2024). He runs the Daily Stoic media empire from his ranch outside Austin, Texas, including a popular newsletter, podcast, and bookstore.
Major Works
The Obstacle Is the Way (2014) is his breakthrough — a field manual for turning adversity into advantage through Stoic principles. Ego Is the Enemy (2016) dissects how ego sabotages success. The Daily Stoic (2016) is the daily devotional that introduced Stoicism to millions. Later books extend the project into the Stoic virtues: Stillness Is the Key, Courage Is Calling, Discipline Is Destiny, and Right Thing, Right Now (justice).
Writing Style and Themes
Holiday writes in crisp, aphoristic, example-driven prose — each chapter typically opens with a historical anecdote (Ulysses S. Grant, Amelia Earhart, Marcus Aurelius) and extracts a practical lesson. His great theme is control: focus only on what you can control, accept what you cannot, and treat obstacles as raw material. He translates Stoic philosophy into performance psychology, emphasizing resilience, humility, and deliberate action over anxiety and ego.
Legacy
Holiday is the central figure in the modern Stoic revival, credited with bringing Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus to a mass audience. His books are famously popular among NFL coaches, Special Forces operators, and tech founders. Whatever one thinks of philosophy-as-life-hack, he proved that two-thousand-year-old ideas could dominate twenty-first-century bestseller lists.
