Rupi Kaur – Author Biography

Early Life

Rupi Kaur was born on October 4, 1992, in Punjab, India, and moved with her family to Brampton, Ontario, Canada, at age four. The daughter of Sikh immigrants, she began drawing and writing as a child, performing her poetry at open mics as a teenager. She studied rhetoric and professional writing at the University of Waterloo.

Career

Kaur began sharing her spare, illustrated poems on Instagram and Tumblr in 2013, building a massive following. In 2014 she self-published milk and honey, a collection on love, loss, trauma, and healing, illustrated with her own line drawings; after going viral online, it was picked up by a major publisher and spent years on the New York Times bestseller list, selling millions of copies. She followed with the sun and her flowers (2017) and home body (2020), both bestsellers. She has toured the world performing her poetry to sold-out audiences.

Major Works

Her three collections are milk and honey, the sun and her flowers, and home body, all written in lowercase with her signature illustrations.

Writing Style and Themes

Kaur writes minimalist free verse in lowercase, paired with simple line drawings, designed for the scroll as much as the page. Her recurring themes are trauma and healing, femininity, migration and identity, self-love, and the body. Her work is confessional and direct, aiming for immediate emotional recognition rather than complexity. Critics have debated her literary merits, but her readers value her accessibility and sincerity.

Legacy

Kaur became the defining poet of the Instagram-poetry era and one of the bestselling poets of all time, credited with bringing poetry to a generation that had abandoned it. Her self-publishing-to-bestseller trajectory reshaped poetry publishing, inspiring countless imitators and a boom in illustrated verse collections.
