W. Chris Winter – Author Biography

Dr. W. Christopher Winter is an American neurologist, sleep researcher, and author whose book The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It (2017) became a bestselling guide to better sleep. He is one of the leading experts on sleep and athletic performance.

Early Life

William Christopher Winter was born on December 27, 1972, in Roanoke, Virginia. He was an Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia, earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine, completed his neurology residency at the University of Virginia — where as chief resident he won a national American Academy of Neurology teaching award — and completed his sleep medicine fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Career

Winter established the Martha Jefferson Hospital Sleep Medicine Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2004 and later founded Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine. His research on sleep and athletic performance — including studies on travel’s effect on Major League Baseball teams, for which he coined the term “circadian advantage” — made him a sought-after consultant to professional sports organizations, including the San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Dodgers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and New York Rangers. His debut book, The Sleep Solution (2017), offered a practical, no-nonsense approach to insomnia and sleep disorders; he followed it with The Rested Child (2021), on sleep disorders in children. He hosts the popular podcast Sleep Unplugged and is board certified in both sleep medicine and neurology.

Major Works

His major works are The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It (2017) and The Rested Child (2021).

Writing Style and Themes

Winter writes in a direct, myth-busting, clinician’s voice — skeptical of sleep gadgets and quick fixes, insistent that most sleep problems are behavioral rather than medical. His central message is that healthy sleep is a skill built on consistent habits, not a product to be purchased. He emphasizes the underappreciated role of sleep in physical performance, mental health, and everyday functioning.

Legacy

Winter helped bring sleep science into mainstream sports and popular culture, and The Sleep Solution remains one of the most recommended books for chronic poor sleepers. His work has influenced how professional teams — and millions of readers — think about rest as a performance tool.
