TJ Klune – Author Biography
Early Life
Travis John Klune — known as TJ Klune — was born on May 20, 1982, in Roseburg, Oregon. He grew up in the Pacific Northwest and worked a variety of jobs, including as a claims examiner for an insurance company, while writing fiction on the side. His background as a queer writer in small-town America informs the found-family warmth at the heart of his books.
Career
Klune published numerous novels with small presses in the 2010s, building a loyal readership in queer romance and fantasy. His mainstream breakthrough came with The House in the Cerulean Sea (2020), a cozy fantasy about a caseworker at a magical orphanage who falls for its caretaker — a book that became a word-of-mouth phenomenon and won the Alex Award. He followed it with Under the Whispering Door (2021), about a man who wakes up dead and must learn to let go, and In the Lives of Puppets (2023), a Pinocchio-inspired adventure. A sequel to Cerulean Sea, Somewhere Beyond the Sea, arrived in 2024.
Major Works
The House in the Cerulean Sea (2020), Under the Whispering Door (2021), In the Lives of Puppets (2023), Somewhere Beyond the Sea (2024), and the Tales from Verania and Green Creek series.
Writing Style and Themes
Klune is a leading voice of the “cozy fantasy” wave: warm, funny, dialogue-driven novels where the stakes are emotional rather than apocalyptic. His books center queer protagonists and found families — orphans, outcasts, and misfits who build homes together. Themes of acceptance, grief, kindness as a radical act, and queer joy run through all his work. His prose is conversational and banter-heavy, designed to feel like a hug.
Legacy
The House in the Cerulean Sea became one of the defining books of the pandemic era — a comfort read embraced by millions — and helped establish cozy fantasy as a major publishing trend. Klune’s success demonstrated a huge mainstream appetite for unapologetically queer, gentle speculative fiction.
