Shari Lapena – Author Biography
Early Life
Shari Lapena is a Canadian author who worked as a lawyer and as an English teacher before turning to fiction. She began her writing career with literary fiction, publishing two novels, before finding her true métier in the psychological thriller.
Career
Lapena’s breakthrough came with The Couple Next Door (2016), the story of a baby who vanishes during a dinner party next door. Published to immediate international success, it became a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller, sold in dozens of territories, and established Lapena as a major thriller writer. She followed it with a string of bestselling domestic suspense novels: A Stranger in the House (2017), An Unwanted Guest (2018), Someone We Know (2019), The End of Her (2020), Not a Happy Family (2021), and Everyone Here Is Lying (2023). Her books are published in more than 35 languages, and several have been optioned for screen adaptation.
Major Works
The Couple Next Door (2016) remains her signature novel. An Unwanted Guest (2018), a locked-room-style mystery at a remote inn, and The End of Her (2020), about a husband with a buried past, are among her most acclaimed.
Writing Style and Themes
Lapena writes classic suburban suspense: ordinary neighborhoods, respectable families, and the rot underneath. Her great subject is the unreliability of everyone — spouses, neighbors, narrators — and her plots turn on secrets revealed in escalating waves. Her prose is clean, fast, and unshowy, built for the twist-driven page-turner. Recurring themes include marital distrust, parental guilt, and the gap between public respectability and private truth.
Legacy
Lapena became one of Canada’s most successful thriller exports and a mainstay of the domestic-suspense boom of the late 2010s. The Couple Next Door is frequently cited among the defining “suburban noir” novels of its era, and her consistent output has made her one of the genre’s most reliable bestsellers.
