Scott Lynch – Author Biography
Early Life
Scott Lynch was born on 2 April 1978 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He worked a variety of jobs — including as a web designer and volunteer firefighter — while writing the fantasy novel that would become his debut.
Career
Lynch’s first novel, The Lies of Locke Lamora (2006), arrived as a sensation: a fast-talking con artist leading a gang of orphan thieves in a Venice-like city of canals and alchemy. It launched the Gentleman Bastard sequence, continued in Red Seas Under Red Skies (2007) and The Republic of Thieves (2013), with further volumes long awaited by fans. The books earned him a devoted following and multiple award nominations.
Major Works
The Lies of Locke Lamora (2006) is his signature work, followed by Red Seas Under Red Skies (2007) and The Republic of Thieves (2013).
Writing Style and Themes
Lynch writes witty, profane, high-energy fantasy — Elizabethan swashbuckling meets Ocean’s Eleven. His recurring themes are loyalty among thieves, the cost of cleverness, found family, and the romance of the perfect con. His dialogue is among the sharpest in modern fantasy, and his interludes — flashbacks to the gang’s training — give the books their emotional spine.
Legacy
Lynch helped define the “new” epic fantasy of the 2000s: morally grey, fast-paced, and character-driven. The Lies of Locke Lamora remains a gateway recommendation for readers new to adult fantasy.
