Samantha Shannon – Author Biography

Early Life

Samantha Shannon was born in 1991 in London, England. She began writing at fifteen and studied English language and literature at St Anne’s College, Oxford. While still an undergraduate, she signed a major publishing deal — an extraordinary start that made her one of the most watched debut novelists of her generation.

Career

Shannon published The Bone Season in 2013 at the age of twenty-one, launching a planned seven-book dystopian fantasy series set in a clairvoyant underworld. After several volumes, she pivoted to standalone epic fantasy with The Priory of the Orange Tree (2019), an 800-page feminist reimagining of the Saint George and the dragon legend, which became an international bestseller. Its prequel, A Day of Fallen Night (2023), returned to the same world centuries earlier and was another major success. She continues both series in parallel.

Major Works

Her key works are The Bone Season (2013) and its sequels, the standalone epic The Priory of the Orange Tree (2019), and its prequel A Day of Fallen Night (2023).

Writing Style and Themes

Shannon writes lush, large-scale fantasy with intricate magic systems, multiple point-of-view heroines, and a deliberate centring of queer romance and female power. Her worlds are built on deep invented histories, religions, and languages. Recurring themes include resistance to oppressive orders, the tension between duty and desire, found family, and the rewriting of myth from the perspective of those it erased.

Legacy

Though still early in her career, Shannon has become a defining voice of modern epic fantasy, credited with proving that doorstopper feminist fantasy could top bestseller lists. The Priory of the Orange Tree is frequently cited among the decade’s landmark fantasy novels and has a devoted global fandom.
