Richard Koch – Author Biography

Richard Koch is the British author, speaker, and investor who popularized the 80/20 Principle — the idea that a small fraction of causes produces the majority of results — turning an obscure statistical observation into one of the most influential business ideas of the modern era.

Early Life

Richard John Koch was born on July 28, 1950, in London, England. He studied at Wadham College, Oxford, earning his M.A., and then earned an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania — an elite education that launched him into the highest ranks of management consulting.

Career

Koch began his consulting career at the Boston Consulting Group, became a partner at Bain & Company in 1981, and in 1983 co-founded L.E.K. Consulting, which grew into a major international strategy firm. In 1990 he retired from full-time consulting to write and invest. His landmark book, The 80/20 Principle: The Secret of Achieving More with Less (1997), argued that the Pareto principle — 80 percent of results come from 20 percent of efforts — applies not just to economics but to business strategy, careers, and personal life. It sold over a million copies, was translated into dozens of languages, and was named by GQ as one of the top 25 business books of all time. As an investor, he backed companies including Filofax, Plymouth Gin, Betfair, and FanDuel. He has written more than 20 books, including The Star Principle and Living the 80/20 Way.

Major Works

Koch’s defining work is The 80/20 Principle (substantially updated in later editions). His other books include The Star Principle, Living the 80/20 Way: Work Less, Worry Less, Succeed More, Enjoy More, 80/20 Sales and Marketing, and The Financial Times Guide to Strategy.

Writing Style and Themes

Koch writes with a consultant’s clarity and an iconoclast’s confidence. His central insight is disarmingly simple: most effort is wasted, and extraordinary results come from identifying and doubling down on the “vital few” — the 20 percent of customers, products, or activities that generate 80 percent of value. He applies this lens ruthlessly to strategy, investing, time management, and happiness itself. His tone is contrarian and liberating: conventional wisdom says diversify and work harder; Koch says focus and do less. His work sits at the intersection of efficiency and philosophy — a kind of applied minimalism for achievers.

Legacy

The 80/20 Principle is now part of the standard vocabulary of business, and Koch did more than anyone to put it there. His framework shaped how startups think about customers, how investors think about portfolios, and how individuals think about their time. A self-described “sun worshipper” who divides his time between homes in sunny countries, he remains the living embodiment of his own philosophy: achieve more by doing less.
