Raymond A. Moody Jr – Author Biography

Early Life

Raymond A. Moody Jr. was born in 1944 in Porterdale, Georgia. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, a master’s and Ph.D. in philosophy, and then a medical degree — an unusual dual training that let him approach the boundary between life and death as both philosopher and physician. He trained as a psychiatrist.

Career

While teaching philosophy, Moody began collecting accounts from patients who had been resuscitated after clinical death — and noticed striking patterns: the tunnel, the bright light, the life review, the feeling of peace. He coined the term “near-death experience” and published Life After Life in 1975. The book became an international bestseller, translated into dozens of languages, and essentially created the scientific and popular study of near-death experiences. Moody went on to write Reflections on Life After Life, The Light Beyond, and Reunions, exploring apparitions and after-death communication. He has spent his career as a researcher, lecturer, and counselor on grief and the afterlife, straddling the line between medicine and the paranormal — respected by millions of readers, debated by skeptics.

Major Works

Life After Life (1975) is his landmark — the book that named and mapped the near-death experience. His later works extended the inquiry into visions, reunions, and the philosophy of survival.

Writing Style and Themes

Moody writes as a gentle investigator: case studies presented plainly, patterns noted carefully, conclusions offered tentatively. His great theme is that death may not be the end — and that the consistency of near-death accounts across cultures demands serious attention. His style is that of the compassionate physician, more interested in comforting the grieving than in winning arguments.

Legacy

Moody essentially invented the field of near-death studies: the term “near-death experience” is his coinage, and the research tradition he founded continues in hospitals and universities worldwide. Life After Life changed how millions think about death, making him one of the most influential writers on the afterlife of the modern era.
