Ramit Sethi – Author Biography
Early Life
Ramit Singh Sethi was born on June 30, 1982, in California, to Indian immigrant parents. He attended Stanford University, earning a BA in Science, Technology, and Society with a minor in psychology and an MA in sociology. As a student, he won dozens of scholarships to fund his education; after losing half of his first scholarship check in the stock market, he became determined to master personal finance.
Career
While still at Stanford in 2004, Sethi started the blog “I Will Teach You to Be Rich,” sharing blunt, jargon-free money advice. The blog grew into a business, and his book I Will Teach You to Be Rich (2009) became a New York Times bestseller, with an updated second edition in 2019. He founded GrowthLab (formerly IWT), an online education company, and co-founded the wiki company PBworks. He hosts the I Will Teach You to Be Rich podcast, counseling couples on money, and in 2023 starred in the Netflix series How to Get Rich, bringing his philosophy to television.
Major Works
His main book is I Will Teach You to Be Rich, a six-week program covering banking, saving, budgeting, and investing. He also published I Will Teach You to Be Rich: The Journal (2022).
Writing Style and Themes
Sethi writes in a brash, funny, no-nonsense voice, mocking both financial-industry jargon and extreme frugality. His core philosophy is “conscious spending”: automate the important stuff, then spend extravagantly on what you love and cut mercilessly on what you don’t. His recurring themes are that personal finance is mostly psychology, that automation beats willpower, and that money should fund a “rich life” defined on your own terms.
Legacy
Sethi became one of the defining personal-finance voices of the millennial generation, with his blog-to-book-to-Netflix trajectory modeling a new kind of financial media career. His emphasis on systems over discipline and on defining wealth personally has influenced how a generation thinks about money.
