Peter Thiel – Author Biography
Early Life
Peter Andreas Thiel was born on October 11, 1967, in Frankfurt, West Germany, and immigrated to the United States as a child, growing up in California. A chess prodigy who ranked among America’s top junior players, he studied philosophy at Stanford University and earned a law degree from Stanford Law School. At Stanford he co-founded The Stanford Review, the campus conservative newspaper — an early sign of the contrarianism that would define him.
Career
After a brief legal career, Thiel co-founded PayPal in 1998 (with Max Levchin and others, alongside Elon Musk’s X.com, with which it merged), serving as CEO until eBay acquired it for $1.5 billion in 2002. He became the first outside investor in Facebook, founded the data-analytics company Palantir, and launched the venture firm Founders Fund, backing companies including SpaceX, Airbnb, and Stripe. He also created the Thiel Fellowship, which pays young people $100,000 to skip college and build companies. His book Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future (2014), adapted from his Stanford lectures by Blake Masters, became the defining startup philosophy text of its era. A controversial political figure, he has been an outspoken supporter of conservative causes and candidates.
Major Works
Zero to One (2014) is his essential book: its central thesis is that progress comes not from copying (going from 1 to n) but from creating something entirely new (going from 0 to 1) — and that monopolies, not competition, drive innovation.
Writing Style and Themes
Thiel writes and speaks as the philosopher-contrarian of Silicon Valley: aphoristic, provocative, and steeped in René Girard’s theory of mimetic desire. His great themes are the value of secrets (important truths few agree with), the sterility of competition, and the need for definite optimism about the future. His style is compressed and epigrammatic — every sentence designed to be quoted.
Legacy
Thiel is one of the most influential — and divisive — figures in modern technology: PayPal co-founder, Facebook’s first investor, Palantir founder, and the mentor of a generation of founders. Zero to One reshaped startup thinking worldwide, making “contrarian” the highest compliment in Silicon Valley. His career embodies both the creative and the controversial extremes of tech power.
