Naval Ravikant – Author Biography
Naval Ravikant is an Indian-American entrepreneur, investor, and philosopher of work and wealth, best known as the co-founder of AngelList and as the subject of The Almanack of Naval Ravikant — a collection of his writings and interviews on building wealth and happiness that became a modern classic of startup culture.
Early Life
Naval Ravikant was born on November 5, 1974, in New Delhi, India, and moved with his family to New York as a child, where he was raised largely by his single mother in modest circumstances. He studied computer science and economics at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1995.
Career
Ravikant began his career in the early days of the consumer internet, co-founding the consumer-review site Epinions in 1999. After a difficult experience with venture investors there, he became determined to democratize startup investing — which led him to co-found AngelList in 2010, the platform that opened early-stage investing to a far wider pool of participants. As an angel investor, he backed companies including Twitter, Uber, and Yammer. Alongside investing, he became famous for his concise, aphoristic philosophy shared on Twitter and podcasts: on wealth (“seek wealth, not money or status”), leverage, reading, and happiness as a skill. Eric Jorgenson compiled these into The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness (2020), which became a word-of-mouth phenomenon in tech circles and has been translated into many languages.
Major Works
His major work is The Almanack of Naval Ravikant (2020), compiled by Eric Jorgenson from Ravikant’s essays, tweets, and interviews.
Writing Style and Themes
Ravikant’s style is the tweet-thread as philosophy: ultra-concise maxims, mental models, and first-principles reasoning. His central distinction is between wealth (assets that earn while you sleep) and money/status (zero-sum games). Recurring themes include specific knowledge, the leverage of code and media, the importance of reading foundational texts, judgment as the highest-leverage skill, and happiness as a choice and a skill that can be developed.
Legacy
Ravikant is one of the defining thinkers of the modern startup era — part investor, part philosopher-king of Twitter. The Almanack has become a canonical text for founders and knowledge workers, and his ideas about leverage, permissionless work, and “escape competition through authenticity” continue to shape how a generation thinks about careers.
