Marty Cagan – Author Biography

Early Life

Marty Cagan is an American technology executive and author. He studied at the University of Maryland and Stanford University. He entered the software industry in the early days of the personal computer revolution, giving him a front-row seat to how great products get built.

Career

Cagan spent over a decade in product leadership roles at some of Silicon Valley’s most important companies: he led product teams at Hewlett-Packard, Netscape Communications, and eBay during its formative growth years. After leaving eBay, he founded the Silicon Valley Product Group (SVPG), a consultancy that advises technology companies on product management and organizational design. His book Inspired: How to Create Tech Products Customers Love (2008; second edition 2017) became the standard text on modern product management, defining the roles of product manager, product designer, and engineers working in empowered teams. Empowered: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Products (2020, with Chris Jones) addressed the leadership side: how to build an environment where product teams can thrive.

Writing Style and Themes

Cagan writes direct, opinionated, practitioner-to-practitioner prose — less theory than field manual. His core ideas: product teams should be given problems to solve, not features to build; discovery (prototyping, testing) must precede delivery; and the best companies are organized around empowered, cross-functional teams. His themes are customer obsession, continuous discovery, and the difference between “feature teams” and true product teams.

Legacy

Inspired is the most influential product-management book of the modern era — required reading at tech companies worldwide and the text that professionalized the product manager role. Cagan’s frameworks underpin how companies from startups to enterprises build software today.
