Jim Loehr – Author Biography

Jim Loehr is an American performance psychologist and author, co-founder of the Human Performance Institute, whose book The Power of Full Engagement introduced the concept of managing energy — not time — as the key to sustained high performance.

Early Life

James E. Loehr earned his doctorate in psychology and initially focused his research on the mental side of athletic performance, working with elite tennis players and other professional athletes on focus, resilience, and competitive toughness.

Career

Loehr spent years coaching world-class athletes, including tennis champions, on the psychology of winning. In the 1990s he co-founded the Human Performance Institute (originally LGE Performance Systems) in Orlando, Florida, applying the training principles of elite athletes — oscillation between stress and recovery — to corporate executives, surgeons, military operators, and other high performers. His book The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal (2003), co-authored with Tony Schwartz, became a business bestseller, arguing that energy comes in four dimensions (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) and must be systematically renewed through rituals. He has written or co-written numerous other books on mental toughness, including Mental Toughness Training for Sports and The Power of Story.

Major Works

His major works include Mental Toughness Training for Sports (1986), The Power of Full Engagement (2003, with Tony Schwartz), The Power of Story (2007), and Leading with Character (2021).

Writing Style and Themes

Loehr writes as a scientist-coach: research-grounded, practical, and structured around training protocols. His central idea is that high performance is not about pushing harder but about managing energy through deliberate rituals of stress and recovery — the same way athletes train. Recurring themes include the primacy of rituals over willpower, the connection between physical energy and mental focus, and the stories people tell themselves as the hidden driver of performance.

Legacy

Loehr helped move corporate performance thinking from time management to energy management — an idea now embedded in executive coaching worldwide. The Human Performance Institute’s methods have been adopted by major corporations, and The Power of Full Engagement remains one of the most influential performance books of its era.
