James Dashner – Author Biography

Early Life

James Dashner was born on November 26, 1972, in Austell, Georgia. Raised in the Atlanta area, he was an avid reader of fantasy and science fiction as a boy. He attended Brigham Young University in Utah, where he studied accounting, and worked in the finance industry for several years before turning to writing full time.

Career

Dashner began his writing career with the Jimmy Fincher Saga, a fantasy adventure series for young readers, followed by The 13th Reality series. His breakthrough came in 2009 with The Maze Runner, the first book of a dystopian trilogy about teenagers trapped in a deadly labyrinth with no memory of their past. The series became an international bestseller and was adapted into a successful film franchise by 20th Century Fox beginning in 2014. Dashner expanded the world with prequels including The Kill Order and The Fever Code. In 2018, following allegations of sexual misconduct reported in the publishing press, his publisher dropped him; he has since continued to publish independently.

The Maze Runner film trilogy (2014–2018), starring Dylan O’Brien, grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide and introduced the Glade to a generation of moviegoers. Dashner expanded the saga with the prequel novels The Kill Order and The Fever Code, answering the series’ central mysteries about WICKED and the Flare. His later Mortality Doctrine series explored virtual reality, showing his continued fascination with constructed worlds and the minds trapped inside them.

Major Works

Dashner’s best-known works are The Maze Runner (2009), The Scorch Trials (2010), and The Death Cure (2011), the core trilogy, plus the prequels The Kill Order (2012) and The Fever Code (2016). His earlier series include The 13th Reality and The Jimmy Fincher Saga, and he later launched The Mortality Doctrine series beginning with The Eye of Minds (2013).

Writing Style and Themes

Dashner writes fast-paced, high-concept young adult fiction built around mysteries that unfold in layers. His signature move is the slow reveal: characters — and readers — begin knowing almost nothing, and the truth emerges through escalating danger. His recurring themes include memory and identity, the ethics of sacrificing the few for the many, survival under authoritarian control, and loyalty among young people abandoned by adult institutions. His chapters end on cliffhangers, and his pacing owes as much to action cinema as to literary tradition.

Legacy

James Dashner was one of the central authors of the young adult dystopian boom of the early 2010s, alongside Suzanne Collins and Veronica Roth. The Maze Runner sold millions of copies worldwide, spent extended runs on bestseller lists, and its film adaptations grossed hundreds of millions of dollars. Although controversy curtailed his mainstream publishing career, the Maze Runner series remains one of the defining YA franchises of its era.
