Jake Knapp – Author Biography

Early Life

Jake Knapp is an American designer and author who became obsessed with a practical problem: why do teams take months to build products nobody wants? His answer became one of the most influential processes in modern product development.

Career

Knapp was a design partner at Google Ventures (GV), where he developed the “design sprint” — a five-day process for answering critical business questions through rapid prototyping and customer testing. He ran sprints with startups across GV’s portfolio before distilling the method into Sprint: How to Solve Big Problems and Test New Ideas in Just Five Days (2016, with John Zeratsky and Braden Kowitz), which became a bestseller and a standard text in tech. He followed it with Make Time: How to Focus on What Matters Every Day (2018, with Zeratsky), applying sprint thinking to personal productivity.

Major Works

Sprint (2016) and Make Time (2018).

Writing Style and Themes

Knapp writes practical, checklist-driven nonfiction — less theory, more “do this on Monday.” His recurring themes are that speed beats perfection, that real customer reactions beat opinions, that constraints fuel creativity, and that time is the scarcest resource and should be budgeted like money.

Legacy

The design sprint became a global standard at startups and Fortune 500 companies alike, and Sprint is among the most gifted business books in tech. Knapp helped shift product culture from long planning cycles to rapid experimentation.
