Jack Trout – Author Biography
Early Life
Jack Trout was born on January 31, 1935, in the United States. Little is publicly documented about his early life; he built his reputation entirely through his work in advertising and marketing strategy.
Career
Trout began in advertising, working with the legendary Al Ries at Ries Cappiello Colwell. Together they developed the concept of “positioning,” the idea that marketing is a battle for the prospect’s mind. Their 1981 book Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind became one of the most influential marketing books ever written. Trout went on to found Trout & Partners, a global marketing strategy consultancy, and wrote a series of influential books including Marketing Warfare (with Ries), The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing (with Ries), Differentiate or Die, and Repositioning. He consulted for companies around the world until his death on June 4, 2017.
Major Works
His essential books are Positioning, Marketing Warfare, The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, Differentiate or Die, and Repositioning.
Writing Style and Themes
Trout wrote blunt, combative marketing prose, full of military metaphors and punchy case studies. His central doctrine is that in an overcommunicated world, the only way to win is to own a distinct position in the customer’s mind, and that differentiation is the essence of strategy. His recurring themes are simplicity, focus, the dangers of line extension, and the idea that marketing is warfare conducted in the mind.
Legacy
Trout and Ries’s concept of positioning is foundational to modern marketing theory, taught in business schools worldwide. Positioning and The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing remain standard texts, and Trout is regarded as one of the great marketing strategists of the twentieth century.
