Hanya Yanagihara – Author Biography

Early Life

Hanya Yanagihara was born on September 20, 1974, in Los Angeles, California, to a Hawaiian-born hematologist father and a Korean-born mother. She grew up partly in Hawaii and graduated from Smith College in 1995. Before becoming a novelist, she worked as a travel writer and editor, eventually becoming editor-in-chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine.

Career

Yanagihara’s debut, The People in the Trees (2013), fictionalized the life of disgraced researcher Daniel Carleton Gajdusek through the story of a Nobel-winning scientist who discovers a life-extending turtle species — and commits monstrous crimes. It was acclaimed but modest. Her second novel, A Little Life (2015), about four friends in New York and the devastating trauma of one of them, Jude St. Francis, became a literary phenomenon: a Booker Prize finalist, a bestseller, and one of the most discussed — and divisive — novels of the decade. To Paradise (2022), three alternate-history stories set in 1893, 1993, and 2093, continued her exploration of utopia and suffering.

Major Works

The People in the Trees (2013), A Little Life (2015), To Paradise (2022).

Writing Style and Themes

Yanagihara writes long, immersive, emotionally extreme novels in precise, controlled prose. Her great subjects are trauma, friendship, and the limits of love: can devotion save someone who believes they are beyond saving? Her work is polarizing by design — readers either find it profoundly moving or unbearably bleak. Recurring motifs include chosen family, the body as a site of pain, wealth as insulation, and New York as a stage for ambition and suffering.

Legacy

A Little Life became one of the defining novels of the 2010s, a book readers press on each other with warnings. Yanagihara proved that maximalist literary fiction about suffering could still become a popular phenomenon, and she remains one of the most argued-about novelists of her generation.
