In 1989 Chilton self-published The Wealthy Barber: The Common Sense Guide to Successful Financial Planning, a folksy parable in which a barber dispenses timeless money wisdom. Writing Style and Themes
Chilton writes in a warm, self-deprecating, story-driven style — financial advice disguised as small-town storytelling. His recurring themes are paying yourself first, the miracle of compound interest, living below your means, and the idea that successful investing is mostly common sense plus patience. He deliberately avoids jargon and hype.
Legacy
The Wealthy Barber is a landmark of Canadian personal finance, credited with introducing a generation to disciplined saving and index-style investing. Chilton remains one of Canada’s most trusted money voices.
