Dan Ariely – Author Biography

Note: this entry was filed under “Duke University” — Ariely’s academic affiliation — rather than his name. The biography below is of the actual author, Dan Ariely.

Early Life

Dan Ariely was born on April 29, 1967, in New York City and raised in Israel. At eighteen he suffered severe burns in an accident, spending three years in hospital — an experience that sparked his lifelong fascination with human behavior, pain, and decision-making. He earned degrees in psychology, philosophy, and business administration, culminating in a Ph.D. from Duke University.

Career

Ariely is the James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University and one of the founders of the field of behavioral economics. His research uses clever experiments to show how irrational humans really are: we cheat a little but not a lot, we overvalue what we own, and free things warp our judgment. Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions (2008) became an international bestseller, followed by The Upside of Irrationality (2010), The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty (2012), and Dollars and Sense (2017, with Jeff Kreisler).

Major Works

Predictably Irrational (2008), The Upside of Irrationality (2010), The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty (2012), Irrationally Yours (2013), Dollars and Sense (2017), Misbelief (2023).

Writing Style and Themes

Ariely writes with the voice of a mischievous lab scientist: each chapter presents a surprising experiment, then unpacks what it reveals about everyday life — dating, shopping, cheating, motivation. His central theme is that irrationality is predictable and therefore manageable: once we understand our biases, we can design environments that nudge us toward better choices.

Legacy

Alongside Daniel Kahneman and Richard Thaler, Ariely made behavioral economics a household idea. Predictably Irrational is one of the defining popular-science books of the 2000s, and his TED talks have been viewed tens of millions of times.
