Chris Anderson – Author Biography

Early Life

Chris Anderson was born on July 9, 1961, in London, England, and raised partly in the United States. He studied physics at George Washington University and began his career in science journalism, working at the journals Nature and Science before moving into technology coverage at The Economist.

Career

Anderson became editor-in-chief of Wired magazine in 2001 and led it for eleven years, turning it into the defining chronicler of digital culture. In a 2004 Wired article he coined the term “the long tail” to describe how the internet lets niche products collectively outsell hits — an idea he expanded into the bestselling book The Long Tail (2006). He followed it with Free: The Future of a Radical Price (2009), arguing that digital economics was driving the price of many goods toward zero, and Makers (2012), on the democratization of manufacturing through 3D printing. In 2012 he left Wired to run 3D Robotics, a drone company he co-founded, and later became involved in the open-source drone movement. In 2015 he became the curator of the TED Conference, succeeding Chris Anderson the media entrepreneur — a different person with whom he is often confused — and has since shaped TED’s global talks program.

Major Works

The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More (2006) is his landmark book, named one of the best business books of its era. Free: The Future of a Radical Price (2009) and Makers: The New Industrial Revolution (2012) completed his trilogy on digital economics.

Writing Style and Themes

Anderson writes as a journalist-theorist: he spots a pattern in technology, names it memorably, and builds a framework around it. His great theme is abundance — how the internet collapses the costs of production and distribution, and what that does to business models, culture, and power. His prose is clear, data-driven, and aimed at executives and entrepreneurs. The “long tail” entered the language as one of the defining business concepts of the internet age.

Legacy

Anderson’s long-tail theory became essential vocabulary for understanding the digital economy, influencing everyone from Netflix to Amazon. As Wired‘s editor he shaped how a generation thought about technology, and as TED’s curator he has guided one of the world’s most influential idea platforms. His books remain standard texts on how the internet rewrote the rules of business.
