Benjamin Graham – Author Biography

Early Life

Benjamin Graham was born Benjamin Grossbaum on May 9, 1894, in London, England; his family immigrated to New York when he was an infant. A brilliant student, he was offered faculty positions in three departments at Columbia University upon graduation but chose Wall Street instead. He began at a brokerage firm in 1914 and quickly distinguished himself as an analyst of unusual rigor.

Career

Graham founded his own investment partnership in the 1920s and survived the 1929 crash with his reputation for caution enhanced. He began teaching investing at Columbia Business School in 1928, where his most famous student was Warren Buffett, who has called Graham the second most influential person in his life after his father. With David Dodd, Graham wrote Security Analysis (1934), the foundational text of value investing, and then The Intelligent Investor (1949), addressed to the individual investor. The book introduced the allegory of “Mr. Market” — the manic-depressive partner who offers to buy and sell shares at irrational prices — and the concept of the “margin of safety.” Graham retired from Wall Street in 1956 and spent his later years teaching at UCLA. He died on September 21, 1976.

Major Works

Graham’s major works are Security Analysis (1934, with David Dodd) and The Intelligent Investor (1949).

Writing Style and Themes

Graham wrote with professorial clarity and dry wit, translating the mathematics of finance into principles any thoughtful reader could grasp. His central theme is the distinction between investing and speculating: the intelligent investor buys businesses at prices below their intrinsic value, demands a margin of safety, and treats market fluctuations as opportunities rather than guides. He was deeply skeptical of forecasts and fads, insisting that temperament — patience, discipline, emotional control — matters more than intellect in investing.

Legacy

Benjamin Graham is known as the father of value investing, and The Intelligent Investor — which Warren Buffett has called “by far the best book on investing ever written” — remains the bible of the discipline. His ideas underpin the investment philosophies of Buffett, Seth Klarman, and generations of fund managers, and his emphasis on the investor’s psychology anticipated behavioral finance by decades.
