Writing Style and Themes
Albertalli writes warm, funny, big-hearted YA in the voice of contemporary teenagers — group chats, fandoms, and all. Her recurring themes are coming out and coming of age, the messiness of first love, friendship as family, and the right of queer teens to joyful, ordinary happy endings.
Legacy
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and its film adaptation were watershed moments for LGBTQ representation in mainstream teen culture, helping normalise queer love stories in commercial publishing and Hollywood.
