Alix E. Harrow – Author Biography

Early Life

Alix E. Harrow was born on November 9, 1989, in Idaho and grew up in Colorado and Kentucky. A precocious student, she enrolled at Berea College at sixteen and completed a bachelor’s degree in history in three years, later earning a master’s degree in history from the University of Vermont. Before writing full-time, she worked as an academic, an adjunct professor, a cashier, and even a blueberry harvester.

Career

Harrow began publishing short fiction in the mid-2010s, and her story “A Witch’s Guide to Escape: A Practical Compendium of Portal Fantasies” won the Hugo Award in 2019. Her debut novel, The Ten Thousand Doors of January (2019), was a critical sensation, shortlisted for the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards. She followed it with The Once and Future Witches (2020) and Starling House (2023), establishing herself as one of speculative fiction’s most decorated new voices.

Major Works

The Ten Thousand Doors of January (2019), The Once and Future Witches (2020) — a suffragette-era tale of sisterhood and witchcraft — the fairytale novellas A Spindle Splintered (2021) and A Mirror Mended (2022), and Starling House (2023), a gothic mystery set in Kentucky. Her short fiction has been nominated for the Nebula, World Fantasy, and Locus Awards.

Writing Style and Themes

Harrow writes lush, lyrical fantasy steeped in history — unsurprising from a trained historian. Her great subjects are doors and words: who gets to pass through them, who gets to tell the story. Her novels explore colonialism, women’s power, and the radical act of rewriting inherited narratives. She blends fairy-tale archetypes with sharp political consciousness, and her prose is famously gorgeous — sentences readers underline. Feminism, sisterhood, and the magic of language run through everything she writes.

Legacy

In just a few years, Harrow has become one of the most acclaimed fantasy writers of her generation, with a Hugo Award and a devoted readership. Her debut is already considered a modern classic of portal fantasy. She represents a new wave of speculative fiction that treats fairy tales as serious political and emotional instruments.
