Viola Davis – Author Biography

Early Life

Viola Davis was born on 11 August 1965 in St. Matthews, South Carolina, and raised in poverty in Central Falls, Rhode Island. She discovered acting as a teenager, studied theatre at Rhode Island College, and trained at the Juilliard School — the foundation of one of the great acting careers of her generation.

Career

Davis conquered stage (two Tony Awards), television (an Emmy for How to Get Away with Murder), and film (an Oscar for Fences, 2016), becoming the first Black performer to achieve the “Triple Crown of Acting” and later an EGOT. In 2022 she published her memoir Finding Me, a searing account of her journey from “the dirt” of her childhood to the heights of Hollywood, which won the Grammy for Best Audiobook Narration. She runs the production company JuVee Productions with her husband.

Major Works

Finding Me (2022) is her memoir and literary landmark.

Writing Style and Themes

Davis writes memoir with an actor’s immediacy — scenes rendered in full sensory detail, pain unflinching. Her recurring themes are surviving poverty and abuse, the cost of invisibility for Black women, therapy and healing, and the radical act of claiming one’s own story. Her voice is by turns furious, tender, and triumphant.

Legacy

Beyond her EGOT, Davis is celebrated for forcing Hollywood to confront its exclusion of dark-skinned Black women, and for her advocacy on hunger and representation. Finding Me became an instant classic of celebrity memoir — unusually literary and honest.
