V.E. Schwab – Author Biography
Early Life
Victoria Schwab — who publishes adult books as V.E. Schwab and children’s/YA books as Victoria Schwab — was born on July 7, 1987, in California and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. She studied art history at Washington University in St. Louis, where she wrote her debut novel before graduating.
Career
Schwab debuted with The Near Witch (2011), published when she was just 23. She built her reputation with the Shades of Magic trilogy (2015–2017), about the parallel Londons and the Antari magicians who travel between them — a series beloved for its worldbuilding and the fan-favorite characters Kell and Lila. A Darker Shade of Magic became a BookTok-era staple. Her breakout into the mainstream came with The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (2020): the story of a woman cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets, spanning three centuries. It debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and became one of the defining fantasy novels of the 2020s. She has also written the Villains duology (Vicious, 2013; Vengeful, 2018).
Major Works
The Shades of Magic trilogy (A Darker Shade of Magic, 2015; A Gathering of Shadows, 2016; A Conjuring of Light, 2017); the Villains duology; The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (2020); Gallant (2022).
Writing Style and Themes
Schwab writes lush, romantic, character-driven fantasy with a gift for morally gray protagonists and aching love stories. Her signature themes — memory, identity, bargains with dark powers, and what it means to leave a mark on the world — run through all her work. Addie LaRue is her thesis novel: a meditation on being remembered versus being known. Her prose is elegant and quotable, built for emotional devastation.
Legacy
Schwab is one of the most successful fantasy authors of her generation, with millions of readers and a devoted fandom. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue became a modern classic of romantic fantasy, and her dual-pen-name career showed how one writer could serve both YA and adult audiences.
