Sir Martin Gilbert – Author Biography

Early Life

Martin Gilbert was born on October 25, 1936, in London, England. He was educated at Highgate School and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he studied modern history. As a postgraduate, he worked as a research assistant to Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill’s son, on the official biography of the great wartime leader — an apprenticeship that would define his life’s work.

Career

When Randolph Churchill died in 1968, Gilbert was chosen to continue as Churchill’s official biographer — an undertaking that consumed decades and produced eight massive volumes, the last appearing in 1988, accompanied by volumes of documents. Alongside the biography, he wrote the single-volume Churchill: A Life (1991), the standard one-volume life of Churchill. But Gilbert was far more than Churchill’s biographer: he was one of the most prolific historians of the twentieth century, publishing more than eighty books, including pioneering histories of the Holocaust (The Holocaust: A History of the Jews of Europe During the Second World War, 1985), the First World War, the Second World War, and the twentieth century as a whole. His historical atlases set new standards for the field. He was knighted in 1995 for services to history. He died on February 3, 2015.

Major Works

Gilbert’s major works include the eight-volume official biography Winston S. Churchill (1971–1988), Churchill: A Life (1991), The Holocaust (1985), The First World War (1994), The Second World War (1989), and his historical atlases.

Writing Style and Themes

Gilbert wrote with documentary thoroughness and narrative clarity, letting the accumulated detail of diaries, letters, and archives carry the story. His great subject was the twentieth century’s tragedies and triumphs — he believed history’s value lay in bearing witness, particularly to the Holocaust, about which he wrote with moral urgency. His Churchill biography is both a monument of scholarship and a defense of its subject, written with an insider’s sympathy.

Legacy

Sir Martin Gilbert was among the most productive historians of modern times, and his Churchill biography remains the definitive official life. His Holocaust histories were pioneering works that brought the subject to wide audiences, and his atlases transformed how history is visualized. He set a standard for industrious, archive-driven historical writing.
