Paulo Coelho – Author Biography

Early Life

Paulo Coelho was born on August 24, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A rebellious youth, he was committed to a mental institution three times by parents who didn’t understand his artistic ambitions — an experience he later wrote about in Veronika Decides to Die. Before becoming a novelist, he was a songwriter, writing lyrics for the Brazilian rock star Raul Seixas, and worked as a journalist and theater director.

Career

A pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago in 1986 transformed Coelho’s life and became his first book, The Pilgrimage (1987). The following year he published The Alchemist, which initially sold modestly — then became one of the best-selling books in history, with over 150 million copies sold and translations into more than 80 languages. He has since published a novel every couple of years, each exploring spirituality and self-discovery.

Major Works

The Pilgrimage (1987), The Alchemist (1988), Brida (1990), The Valkyries (1992), Veronika Decides to Die (1998), Eleven Minutes (2003), and The Zahir (2005). His books have sold over 320 million copies worldwide.

Writing Style and Themes

Coelho writes simple, fable-like prose — short sentences, archetypal characters, spiritual lessons made plain. His great theme is the Personal Legend: the idea that the universe conspires to help those pursuing their true purpose. His novels are pilgrimages in every sense, blending Catholic mysticism, Sufi wisdom, and New Age spirituality. Critics find him simplistic; his hundreds of millions of readers find him life-changing. His message is unfailingly hopeful: listen to your heart, follow your dreams, and the world will open.

Legacy

Coelho is the best-selling Portuguese-language author in history and one of the best-selling novelists alive. The Alchemist holds the Guinness World Record for the most translated book by a living author. Love him or dismiss him, he proved that spiritual fable could conquer the global marketplace — and that readers hunger for meaning as much as story.
