Michelle McNamara – Author Biography

Michelle McNamara was the true-crime writer whose obsessive investigation of a California serial killer — and the book it produced, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark — became a publishing phenomenon and helped bring a decades-old case to its stunning resolution.

Early Life

McNamara was born on April 14, 1970, in Oak Park, Illinois. She studied at the University of Notre Dame and earned a master’s degree in creative writing from the University of Minnesota. She worked in publishing and television writing before turning to true crime.

Career

Fascinated since childhood by an unsolved murder near her home, McNamara launched the true-crime blog True Crime Diary in 2006, writing with literary flair about cold cases. She became consumed by the case of the predator known as the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker — a serial burglar, rapist, and murderer who terrorized California in the 1970s and 80s. McNamara did original investigative work: interviewing retired detectives, poring over police files, and connecting cases across jurisdictions. She coined the name that stuck: the Golden State Killer. She signed a book deal to tell the story — but died suddenly in her sleep on April 21, 2016, at forty-six, before finishing it. Her researcher Paul Haynes and the journalist Billy Jensen completed the manuscript from her notes and drafts. Published in 2018, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark was an instant bestseller and HBO adapted it into an acclaimed documentary series. Two months after publication, Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested and eventually convicted as the Golden State Killer — a resolution McNamara had devoted her final years to pursuing.

Major Works

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer (2018) is her legacy — part memoir of obsession, part masterclass in investigative writing, part love letter to the victims. It stands among the finest true-crime books ever written.

Writing Style and Themes

McNamara wrote true crime as literature — lyrical, empathetic, and novelistic, centering victims rather than the killer’s mythology. Her great themes are obsession as both gift and curse, the moral weight of unsolved cases, and the idea that attention itself is a form of justice. She wrote about the Golden State Killer’s victims with a tenderness that redefined the genre’s ethics.

Legacy

McNamara is remembered as the citizen-investigator who never gave up — her work kept public pressure on a cold case for decades and contributed to its eventual solution. She was married to the comedian Patton Oswalt, whose advocacy helped complete and publish her book. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark endures as both a great book and a monument to what one determined writer can do.
