Katherine Applegate – Author Biography
Early Life
Katherine Alice Applegate was born on October 9, 1956, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She studied at the University of Texas at Austin and lived in Texas, Florida, California, Illinois, and North Carolina before settling in California. She began her career writing for children’s television and young-adult series fiction.
Career
Writing as K.A. Applegate, she created the Animorphs series in the 1990s with her husband, fellow author Michael Grant — a 54-book saga about teenagers who can morph into animals that sold over 35 million copies and became a defining series of 1990s childhood. After years away from the spotlight, she returned with The One and Only Ivan (2012), inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla, which won the Newbery Medal in 2013.
Major Works
The One and Only Ivan (2012), its sequels The One and Only Bob and The One and Only Ruby, the Animorphs, Remnants, and Everworld series, Home of the Brave (2007), Crenshaw (2015), Wishtree (2017), Endling (2018), and the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter-book series.
Writing Style and Themes
Applegate writes with extraordinary empathy for young readers, in prose that is simple without ever being simplistic. Her great theme is the inner life of the voiceless — whether a shopping-mall gorilla, a stray dog, or a tree — and what compassion demands of us. The One and Only Ivan is narrated by Ivan himself in short, poetic bursts. Her work consistently asks children to see the world through others’ eyes and to act on what they see.
Legacy
Applegate is one of the most decorated children’s authors of her generation: a Newbery Medalist whose books are staples of school curricula worldwide. Animorphs remains a beloved 1990s touchstone, adapted for television, while The One and Only Ivan became a Disney film in 2020. She has shown that children’s literature can carry the weight of the world’s hardest moral questions.
