J.M. Barrie – Author Biography

Early Life

James Matthew Barrie was born on May 9, 1860, in Kirriemuir, Scotland, the ninth of ten children. The death of his older brother David at thirteen devastated his mother, and Barrie’s childhood attempts to comfort her — even dressing in his dead brother’s clothes — haunted his imagination forever. He studied at Edinburgh University and moved to London to become a journalist and playwright.

Career

Barrie became one of London’s most successful playwrights with works like The Admirable Crichton (1902). Then came Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, which premiered on stage in 1904 and became a sensation. He novelized it as Peter and Wendy (1911). In 1929 he gifted the copyright to Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, a bequest that has funded the hospital ever since. He died in London on June 19, 1937.

Major Works

Peter Pan (1904 play; Peter and Wendy, 1911 novel), The Admirable Crichton (1902), Quality Street, What Every Woman Knows, and the novels The Little Minister and Sentimental Tommy.

Writing Style and Themes

Barrie wrote whimsical, melancholy prose that treats childhood as both paradise and tragedy. Peter Pan — the boy who wouldn’t grow up — is literature’s great embodiment of arrested development, born from Barrie’s own grief over his brother and his complicated relationships with the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired the story. His great theme is the poignancy of growing up: that every gain is a loss, that mothers are everything, and that death — as Captain Hook learns — is “the only adventure.”

Legacy

Barrie created one of the most enduring characters in all literature; Peter Pan has never left the stage or screen, from Disney’s 1953 film to countless adaptations. His copyright gift to Great Ormond Street Hospital was an act of generosity without precedent. He was made a baronet and awarded the Order of Merit, and “Peter Pan” has entered the language as the name for refusing to grow up.
