Gaston Leroux – Author Biography

Gaston Leroux was the French novelist and journalist whose 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera became one of the most adapted stories in history — the basis for the longest-running show in Broadway history.

Early Life

Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux was born on May 6, 1868, in Paris, France. He studied law and was admitted to the Paris bar, but he abandoned legal practice for journalism, which better suited his restless, adventurous temperament.

Career

Leroux became a celebrated investigative reporter, covering the Russian Revolution of 1905 and sensational trials for Le Matin. He began writing fiction on the side, pioneering the locked-room detective novel with The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1907), featuring the young reporter-detective Joseph Rouletabille. His masterpiece, The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, 1909–1910) — serialized in Le Gaulois — told of the masked musical genius haunting the Paris Opera House. Though only a modest success as a novel, it was transformed by the 1925 Lon Chaney silent film and, definitively, by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 stage musical, which became a global phenomenon. Leroux also co-founded a film production company and wrote numerous adventure and mystery novels.

Major Works

His major works include The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1907), The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1908), The Phantom of the Opera (1910), and The Man with the Black Feather (1909).

Writing Style and Themes

Leroux wrote in the grand feuilleton tradition: serialized, cliffhanger-driven, melodramatic fiction packed with secret passages, disguises, and impossible crimes. His great themes are mystery as puzzle, the genius as monster, and obsessive love. The Phantom — brilliant, deformed, terrifying, pitiable — is one of literature’s great grotesques.

Legacy

Few novels have had a stranger afterlife: a moderately successful French serial became, through film and musical theatre, one of the most famous stories on earth. Leroux died on April 15, 1927, in Nice, France, never knowing the scale of his creation’s fame.
