Dr. BJ Fogg – Author Biography
Early Life
Brian Jeffrey Fogg is an American behavioral scientist. He earned his PhD from Stanford University, where his research focused on how computers and technology influence human behavior — a field he helped pioneer and named “captology” (computers as persuasive technology).
Career
Fogg founded the Stanford Behavior Design Lab, where he spent decades researching what makes human behavior change — and why most attempts fail. His key insight was that behavior happens when motivation, ability, and a prompt converge at the same moment, a model he formalized as B=MAP. He developed the Tiny Habits method: instead of relying on motivation to make big changes, people should design tiny behaviors, anchor them to existing routines, and celebrate immediately to wire in the habit. His book Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything (2020) brought the method to a mass audience and became a bestseller. He has taught his methods to tens of thousands of people through his free Tiny Habits program and coached innovators across Silicon Valley. He also founded the Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab and has advised companies on ethical behavior design.
Major Works
Fogg’s major works are Persuasive Technology: Using Computers to Change What We Think and Do (2002) and Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything (2020).
Writing Style and Themes
Fogg writes as a scientist-coach: clear models, concrete recipes, and an insistence on testing ideas in real life. His central argument is that big behavior change is a design problem, not a willpower problem — shrink the behavior until it’s ridiculously easy, attach it to something you already do, and feel good about doing it. His work stands apart from much self-help in its emphasis on positive emotion (“celebration”) as the mechanism that locks in habits, and in its ethical insistence that behavior design should serve people’s own goals.
Legacy
BJ Fogg is one of the founding figures of behavior design, and his B=MAP model is taught in design and psychology programs worldwide. Tiny Habits became a cornerstone text of the habits movement alongside the work of James Clear and Charles Duhigg, and his free coaching program has introduced his methods to a global audience.
