Charles T. Munger – Author Biography

Early Life

Charles Thomas Munger was born on January 1, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska. He studied mathematics at the University of Michigan, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and earned his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1948 — without an undergraduate degree, admitted on the strength of his intellect. He practiced law in California before leaving the profession to manage investments.

Career

Munger became vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett’s indispensable partner for nearly half a century — Buffett called him “the architect” to his own “general contractor.” Munger’s investment philosophy centered on buying wonderful businesses at fair prices and holding them, and on multidisciplinary thinking: he urged investors to master the “big ideas” of psychology, mathematics, physics, and history, assembling a “latticework of mental models.” His USC Law School commencement address became legendary for its advice to “invert, always invert.” He died on November 28, 2023, at 99. Poor Charlie’s Almanack: The Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger (2005), compiled by Peter Kaufman, collects his speeches and aphorisms.

Major Works

Poor Charlie’s Almanack (2005) — his collected speeches, letters, and talks — is his essential text.

Writing Style and Themes

Munger didn’t write books; he gave talks — blunt, funny, erudite, and quotable. His themes: invert problems, avoid stupidity rather than seeking brilliance, understand incentives (“show me the incentive and I’ll show you the outcome”), and build a latticework of mental models from many disciplines. His style was aphoristic Midwestern wisdom delivered with a curmudgeon’s glee.

Legacy

Munger is revered as one of the great investing minds in history and a philosopher of rationality. Poor Charlie’s Almanack is a cult classic in business and investing circles, and his mental-models framework has influenced fields far beyond finance.
