Burton G. Malkiel – Author Biography

Early Life

Burton Gordon Malkiel was born in 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and his MBA and Ph.D. from Princeton University. Before academia, he worked on Wall Street, giving him a practitioner’s view of the markets he would later analyze.

Career

Malkiel joined the Princeton economics faculty, where he became the Chemical Bank Chairman’s Professor of Economics, Emeritus. In 1973 he published A Random Walk Down Wall Street, which argued that stock prices follow a “random walk” and that most professional investors cannot consistently beat the market — making low-cost index funds the rational choice. The book was revolutionary, predating the index-fund boom by years, and has been updated through more than a dozen editions.

Major Works

A Random Walk Down Wall Street (1973) is his signature work — one of the best-selling investment books of all time. He has also written extensively on emerging markets and served as a director of the Vanguard Group, putting his philosophy into institutional practice.

Writing Style and Themes

Malkiel writes clear, witty, academically grounded investment prose — famous for the line that a blindfolded monkey throwing darts could pick stocks as well as the experts. His great theme is humility before markets: prices incorporate information so efficiently that beating them consistently is nearly impossible, so investors should minimize costs, diversify broadly, and match their strategy to their life cycle. He is the efficient-market hypothesis’s most readable champion.

Legacy

Malkiel is one of the intellectual fathers of index investing, alongside John Bogle. A Random Walk Down Wall Street has guided generations of investors away from stock-picking and toward sensible, low-cost strategies. His work helped create the intellectual climate in which trillions of dollars moved into index funds.
