Adam Lashinsky – Author Biography

Early Life

Adam Lashinsky is an American journalist and author. He studied at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, training as a business reporter.

Career

Lashinsky is an executive editor at Fortune magazine, where he has covered Silicon Valley and the technology industry for years, and a co-chair of Fortune‘s Brainstorm Tech conference. His first book, Inside Apple: How America’s Most Admired — and Secretive — Company Really Works (2012), pulled back the curtain on Apple’s culture of secrecy and operational excellence. He followed with Wild Ride: Inside Uber’s Quest for World Domination (2017) — published in some editions as The Uber Story — a deeply reported account of Uber’s rise under Travis Kalanick, its rule-breaking growth tactics, and the cultural crises that nearly destroyed it.

Major Works

Inside Apple (2012) and Wild Ride: Inside Uber’s Quest for World Domination (2017).

Writing Style and Themes

Lashinsky writes classic Fortune-style business narrative: deeply sourced, balanced, and focused on how great (and troubled) companies actually operate. His themes include the tension between visionary leadership and toxic culture, the mechanics of hypergrowth, and what secrecy costs organizations. His Uber book remains one of the definitive accounts of the ride-hailing wars.

Legacy

Lashinsky is one of Silicon Valley’s most respected chroniclers. His books on Apple and Uber are standard references for understanding how the tech industry’s most secretive and most aggressive companies really work.
